Dogs and Dolphins Forge Unusual Friendships

This is a story about a group of dolphins and one dog at Dolphin Reef Eilat

The story begins about five years ago. One day a fluffy gray dog waltzed his way into Dolphin Reef. We hardly noticed him, but after a few days we noticed that he kept going down to the pier and gazing at the dolphins. He would sit there for hours staring at the dolphins and, of course, the dolphins being curious creatures themselves found him very interesting.

After gaining some confidence, he decided to take the big plunge and join the dolphins in the water. From then on, Joker, which is the dog’s name, decided to swim with them every day.

Joker is a very special dog, not only because he swims with dolphins, but for many other traits. One of the most interesting things is that he comes to Dolphin Reef by foot each day from town which is a few kilometers away and spends the day at Dolphin Reef. When it’s time to go home he usually hitches a ride with one of the workers, it’s very funny to see him waiting at the entrance of Dolphin Reef and when one of the workers he recognizes comes up the stairway towards the parking lot he joins him and once the car doors open
he jumps in and with a look “are you ready to go”. That trait cost us quite dearly one time when he took a ride with the wrong person and ended up a long way from home. We used all our resources to try to find Joker. We looked everywhere in town and on the road leading into town but Joker was not to be found. Then we decided to advertise through our websites and through the national paper. After a few weeks we got a piece of information that a dog meeting our description was on a farm approximately 100 km away and to everyone’s relief it was true. Joker was back at the Dolphin Reef the next day, happy as ever and swimming with the dolphins once again. His little adventure cost us a fortune but having Joker back was worth all the effort and expenses.

So if somebody tells you a story about a dog and a family of dolphins, you might be more inclined to believe them after reading this article. I am sure it’s not the first case of a dog adopting a group of dolphins, but I’ve never heard of it before, so when you come to Dolphin Reef I’m sure that you will see Joker at the end of the pier gazing at the dolphins with a big smile on his face.
